From 2000 through 2011 it was called the Clement L. Hirsch Turf Championship Stakes. The race, now named for John Henry, remains at Santa Anita although the Oak Tree Autumn Meeting was held at Hollywood Park until its closure in December, 2013. From 1969 through 1994 it was raced at a distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 2 miles.
The Oak Tree meet relocated to Hollywood Park for 2010 [12] but the California Horse Racing Board awarded the fall dates to Santa Anita in its own right in 2011. This prompted a renaming of many stakes races held at the fall meeting that were formerly associated with Oak Tree.
The event was inaugurated on 9 October 1982 as the Goodwood Handicap at the Oak Tree Racing Association meeting at Santa Anita Park as the eighth race on the racecard over a distance of 1 + 1 ⁄ 16 miles and was won by the and US Hall of Fame, Lázaro "Laz" Barrera trained Cajun Prince who tied the track record for the distance that was set by Ancient Title in 1978. In 1985 the event was moved to the Oak Tree Racing Association meeting at Santa Anita Park as a sprint for horses three-year-olds and older over six furlongs. [5] In 1990 the event was classified by the American Graded Stakes Committee as Grade III and was upgraded to Grade II status in 1999. [5] In 2001 the event was upgraded to Grade I. [1]
