A random password generator is a software program or hardware device that takes input from a random or pseudo-random number generator and automatically generates a password. Random passwords can be generated manually, using simple sources of randomness such as dice or coins , or they can be generated using a computer.
It represents the top 10,000 passwords from a list of 10 million compiled by Mark Burnett; for other specific attributions, see the readme file. The passwords were listed in numerical order, but the blocks of entries and positions of some simpler entries (e.g., "experienced" at 9975 and "doom" at 9983) hint that this may not be a sorted list.
In the asymptotic setting, a family of deterministic polynomial time computable functions : {,} {,} for some polynomial p, is a pseudorandom number generator (PRNG, or PRG in some references), if it stretches the length of its input (() > for any k), and if its output is computationally indistinguishable from true randomness, i.e. for any probabilistic polynomial time algorithm A, which ...
Non-random data is harmless, because only a privileged user can issue the ioctl needed to increase the entropy estimate. [ dubious – discuss ] The current amount of entropy and the size of the Linux kernel entropy pool, both measured in bits, are available in /proc/sys/kernel/random/ and can be displayed by the command cat /proc/sys/kernel ...
The Worst Passwords List is an annual list of the 25 most common passwords from each year as produced by internet security firm SplashData. [3] Since 2011, the firm has published the list based on data examined from millions of passwords leaked in data breaches, mostly in North America and Western Europe, over each year.

The purpose of password cracking might be to help a user recover a forgotten password (due to the fact that installing an entirely new password would involve System Administration privileges), to gain unauthorized access to a system, or to act as a preventive measure whereby system administrators check for easily crackable passwords. On a file ...
The Fortuna random number generator is an example of an algorithm which uses this mechanism. Generate passwords and passphrases using a true random source. Some [clarification needed] systems select random passwords for the user rather than let users propose their own.
