Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, animal research, and in vivo testing, is the use of non-human animals, such as model organisms, in experiments that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system under study. This approach can be contrasted with field studies in which animals are observed in ...
The inbred strain of C57BL mice was created in 1921 by C. C. Little at the Bussey Institute for Research in Applied Biology. [1] The substrain "6" was the most popular of the surviving substrains.
In animals, non-motile primary cilia are found on nearly every type of cell, blood cells being a prominent exception. [2] Most cells only possess one, in contrast to cells with motile cilia, an exception being olfactory sensory neurons , where the odorant receptors are located, which each possess about ten cilia.
Most animal testing involves invertebrates, especially Drosophila melanogaster, a fruit fly, and Caenorhabditis elegans, a nematode. These animals offer scientists many advantages over vertebrates, including their short life cycle, simple anatomy and the ease with which large numbers of individuals may be studied.
The RMS business unit provides research models (live animals), lab animal diets and bedding and support services. [1] The company has been criticized for its animal testing practices, most specifically animal testing on non-human primates as well as on beagles. It has also been criticized for its laboratory animal sources.
Electron microscope image of tobacco mosaic virus particles Insects were not the only organisms entering the laboratories as test subjects. Bacteria had also been introduced and with the invention of the electron microscope in 1931 by Ernst Ruska , a whole new field of microbiology was born. [ 6 ]
This facility was built for the purpose of live animal testing. Animals for experimentation were bred in the facility too, to provide sterile conditions and a maximum amount of control. It is located in close proximity to the Benjamin Franklin Medical Center and the Institute for Hygiene and Microbiology.
