The Georgia Assembly was unable to raise the $1 million required to purchase the gorge, but Mrs. Longstreet's efforts are among the first recorded conservation movements in Georgia. Once the dam was completed in 1913, the roar of the Tallulah Falls (which could be heard for miles from the gorge) was quieted, and tourism dwindled.

The park's museum was built to incorporate part of an excavated mound; it provides an authentic setting for viewing artifacts. The museum features a film about how this mound was built and excavated. In March 1974, a thief entered the museum at the park and stole more than 129 ancient pots and effigies, numerous arrowheads, and other treasures.

The Mud River is a 6.4-mile-long (10.3 km) [1] tidal arm of the Sapelo River in McIntosh County, Georgia, in the United States. It forms the northern part of the channel separating Sapelo Island from the mainland.
