First edition (publ. Clarion Books) A Long Walk to Water (sometimes shortened to ALWTW) is a short novel written by Linda Sue Park and published in 2010. It blends the true story of Salva Dut whose story is based in 1985, a part of the Dinka tribe and a Sudanese Lost Boy, and the fictional story of Nya whose story is based in 2008, a young village girl that was a part of the Nuer tribe.

Nya, angry with Jay, forces him to retrieve the Tiger Widow Venom alone. Nadakhan and his sky pirates ambush the Ninja, and the djinn takes the canister of venom from Jay, emptying out its contents. Jay is taken to the Misfortune's Keep, but Nya reveals that Nadakhan emptied out the wrong canister.
Lord Garmadon uses his Mega Weapon to create a time portal, hoping to prevent the formation of the Ninja team. The Ninja follow him as he goes back in time to the day Kai met Sensei Wu. After failing to alter the timeline by stopping Nya's kidnapping, Garmadon teams up with his past self and amboushes the past Kai in the Fire Temple.
Nya and Dareth takes Skylor to safety, while Kai, Jay, Zane, and Cole rescue the civilians and fight Colossus, and Lloyd and Wu confront Garmadon. The Elemental Masters and the Ninja's other allies escape from Kryptarium prison and help the Ninja defeat Colossus, while Garmadon defeats Wu and the Firstbourne Dragon, leaving only Lloyd to fight him.
There, the ninja find the legendary, unreleased arcade game called Prime Empire. Realizing the game is missing a motherboard, Jay inserts the motherboard and the game boots up. While Jay plays the game, the other ninja make their way into the Mechanic's private office where they intercept a phone call intended for the Mechanic.
