Damien Steven Hirst (/ h ɜːr s t /; né Brennan; born 7 June 1965) is an English artist and art collector. [1] He was one of the Young British Artists (YBAs) who dominated the art scene in the UK during the 1990s.
The Butterfly Trek Madone, an artwork utilizing a bicycle by Damien Hirst, became the world's most expensive bicycle when it was bought at auction for $500,000. [1] It was designed by Hirst, who used real butterfly wings that were placed onto the actual frame and wheels of the bicycle. [1]
The work was funded by the businessman Charles Saatchi, who in 1991 had offered to pay for whatever artwork Hirst wanted to create. The shark cost Hirst £6,000 [4] and the total cost of the work was £50,000. [5] Hirst asked Doris Lockhart for a loan to cover the cost of shipping the shark from Australia, but she gave him the required amount.
The scene began around a series of artist-led exhibitions held in warehouses and factories, beginning in 1988 with the Damien Hirst-led Freeze and, in 1990, East Country Yard Show and Modern Medicine. They are noted for "shock tactics", use of throwaway materials, wild living, and an attitude "both oppositional and entrepreneurial". [3]
