They are parapatric and replace each other geographically; stray birds of either species may settle down with breeders of the other and hybridize .

This bird looks similar to the widely sympatric sharp-tailed sandpiper ("C." acuminata), which is not a member of the stint clade however. The pectoral sandpiper is a largish calidrid (21 cm (8.3 in) in length, with a wingspan of 46 cm (18 in)) [ 4 ] with a grey-brown back, brownest in the summer male, and grayest in winter.

Baird's sandpiper (Calidris bairdii) is a small shorebird. It is among those calidrids which were formerly included in the genus Erolia , which was subsumed into the genus Calidris in 1973. [ 2 ] The genus name is from Ancient Greek kalidris or skalidris , a term used by Aristotle for some grey-coloured waterside birds.
