Houstoun sent the first plants to become known to science as buddleja (B. americana) to England from the Caribbean about 15 years after Buddle's death. Buddleja species, especially Buddleja davidii and interspecific hybrids, are commonly known as butterfly bushes and are frequently cultivated as garden shrubs. [5]
They have been used in companion planting as pest control in agricultural and garden situations, and in households. Certain plants have shown effectiveness as topical repellents for haematophagous insects, such as the use of lemon eucalyptus in PMD, but incomplete research and misunderstood applications can produce variable results. [1]

Buddleja marrubiifolia is a dioecious multi-branched shrub that is 0.5 to 2 m (1.6 to 6.6 ft) high with greyish to blackish rimose bark. The young branches are terete and tomentose, bearing ovate to rhomboid leaves that are 1 to 3 cm (0.39 to 1.18 in) long by 0.6 to 1.5 cm (0.24 to 0.59 in) wide, membranaceous to subcoriaceous, and densely tomentose on both surfaces.
[10] [11] A. tuberosa is a larval food plant of the queen and monarch butterflies, as well as the dogbane tiger moth, milkweed tussock moth, and the unexpected cycnia. [3] [12] Because of its rough leaves and trichomes, it is not a preferred host plant of the monarch butterfly but caterpillars can be reared on it successfully.
