Parineeta (Bengali: পরিণীতা Porinita) is a 1914 Bengali language novel written by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay and is set in Calcutta, India during the early part of the 20th century. It is a novel of social protest which explores issues of that time period related to class and religion.
The novel was loosely adapted as the 1999 Hindi language film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. [ 6 ] although the film does not give credit to it. The film was a huge hit because of its melodramatic picturisation.

Originally written in Bengali, the book was first published in Hindi as Aalo Aandhari by Roshnai Prakashan in 2002. It was later translated by writer and publisher Urvashi Butalia into English, and published as 'A Life Less Ordinary' by Zubaan Books in collaboration with Penguin Books in 2006. The book has been translated into 25 languages.
