Historically part of Staffordshire , it is located 9 miles (14 km) north-west of Birmingham , 7 miles (11 km) east of Wolverhampton and 9 miles (14 km) from Lichfield .

One of Walsall's finest ever talents, Allan Clarke, made his breakthrough as a first team regular in the 1964–65 season. Aged just 18, he scored 23 league goals in 1964–65 and a further 23 goals in all competitions in 1965–66 .
