[2] The county is named for George Washington Hill, secretary of war and secretary of the navy under the Republic of Texas. Hill County is part of Central Texas, though not included in the Texas Hill Country.

Spur 487 was designated on January 30, 1970, from Loop 374 (now Bus. US 83) in McAllen south along Ware Road to US 83. On December 19, 1996, by district request, Spur 487 was cancelled and transferred to UR 2220 (now FM 2220) to provide a continuous route for FM 2220.
