Michael Pitts was born in south Lima, Ohio, in 1964 to factory workers Eugene and Brenda Pitts. His parents were raised attending church regularly. At the age of 14, Pitts felt called to become a preacher. [2] In June 1986, Pitts and his wife Kathi moved to Toledo to start a non-denominational church, which they named Cornerstone Church.

Cornerstone Theological Seminary had its beginnings as an evening Bible institute at Wealthy Street Baptist Church in 1941. David Otis Fuller who was elected pastor of Wealthy Street Baptist Church on November 4, 1934; became one of the founders of Cornerstone University and Grand Rapids Theological Seminary.
