Kirklin is the son of the late heart surgery pioneer John W. Kirklin. [1] He graduated from Ohio State University in 1969, where he was an All-American diver. [9] [10] He received his MD from Harvard Medical School in 1973 as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha academic honor society.
Born in Brooklyn New York, he spent his entire career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, arriving as a resident in 1967, and retiring in 2006. [1] During his career he was known as a skillful surgeon who performed a very high volume (more than 30,000) [ 2 ] of pediatric and adult cardiovascular surgeries.
