In 2015, the NDP were elected to government for the first time in Alberta's history. The NDP had Alberta's only one term government thus far. In 2019 the newly formed United Conservative Party formed the government. From 1905 to 1956, Alberta elections used a combination of single-member and multi-member districts.
Nominations for the election will open January 1, 2025, and close on September 22, 2025. [2] The government of Alberta has tabled legislation to reform the municipal government system; the Municipal Affairs Statutes Amendment Act, includes two pieces of legislation: the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA) and the Municipal Government Act (MGA). Among the bills passed over the ensuing months was an amendment to the Election Act, changing the fixed election date to the third Monday in October instead of the last Monday in May – this bill passed the assembly on 28 May 2024 and received royal assent on 30 May. The assembly adjourned for the summer on 29 May.
