In 2012, there were 240 protected areas in the Philippines, of which 35 have been classified as National Parks. [2] By June 22, 2018, an additional 94 critical areas were designated as national parks, increasing the total national parks to 107, when President Rodrigo Duterte signed the E-NIPAS Act of 2018 .
The park was the traditional end of the Marlboro Tour (now known as the Tour de Filipinas), the national road bicycle racing event every April or May. Recently, the tour has ended in Baguio. The park is also the host of the National Milo Marathon. Presidential inaugurations are usually held in the park every June 30, six years starting from 1992.
The park is located 101 km (63 mi) from Manila; its mountains can be seen across Manila Bay from the city. It straddles the northern half of Bataan Peninsula near its border with Subic Bay Freeport Zone, encompassing the Bataan towns and cities of Hermosa, Orani, Samal, Abucay, Balanga, Bagac and Morong. Established as a National Park on November 9, 1970, by virtue of Republic Act No. 6148. [7] Listed by ASEAN as one of the nine heritage parks in the Philippines in 2003. The Apo Reef is a protected area of the Philippines classified as a Natural park encompassing 274.69 km 2 (106 sq mi). [7] Of the total area, 157.92 km 2 (61 sq mi) comprises the Apo Reef Natural Park while the remaining 116.77 km 2 (45 sq mi) constitute a buffer zone surrounding the protected area.
