Only in very rare cases are the larvae present in stagnant water. The larvae reside mainly in vegetation. An important factor in the occurrence of beautiful demoiselles is the oxygen in the water. The larvae are much more sensitive to oxygen deficiency than the larvae of the banded demoiselle, and need sufficient oxygen saturation in the water.

Even if these are excluded (as Silsby does), there remains a family of over 1000 species.
