The difference between that one and Oregon 511AX, is that it does not have the wheel wear feature. 'Better' is a matter of preference, just like between brands and models of saws. The 511AX claims to have a self-centering vice, and can do chains up to 3/4 pitch. Centering the vise on the 511A is manual. What is nice about the parallel-closing ...

Sep 26, 2023. #3. The auto grab is too far to one side when grinding new 404 cutters. It could be upgraded to the new Oregon vice but that only helps the chain rollover the inlet and outlet on the vice. Other than that the Tecomec has been much faster with autograb on the jolly star compared to a manual grab setup.
Jan 25, 2012. #5. And now the confusion (as usual for me). The tech sheet enclosed with the Stihl chains shows 90 degrees for both the RSC and RMC chains. At the Oregon site and the 511A manual, it shows 10 degree tilt for the BPX (rounded, semi chisel) and 90 degrees for the LPX (square corner chisel).
Location. Zanesville Ohio. Jun 8, 2015. #4. Not sure what is availible anymore but I preferred resin bonded wheels to the vitrified wheels such as the pink wheels that usually come with the 511 type grinders. Really like the Total branded Fireball wheels. That being said I currently have the pink wheels on both of the 511 type grinders that I use.
6. Location. Michigan. Jan 10, 2012. #1. Gentlemen, I've been hand sharpening chains for many years and recently my workplace inherited a used Oregon 511A grinder in excellent condition. Please help me straighten out some confusion with 1) wheel sizes for specific chains, and 2) correct machines angles for Stihl chain (several sizes and styles).
Reaction score. 9,163. Location. Omaha, Nebraska. Feb 25, 2013. #1. The lift spring broke today and sounded like a 22 rifle when it did. After it snapped, the grinding wheel fell dead down on the saw chain and caught me by surprise. Quite a shock.
Kansas. Nov 17, 2011. #1. I sharpened 10 Carlton 3/8 full chisel chains, A1, last night. The Oregon book showed 25, 60, and 80 degree angles. Most of these chains just needed touched up and the 25 angle didn't match very well. 30 matched decent on the left cutter, but the right cutter didn't completely come clean.
Location. SE WI. Nov 1, 2017. #2. You have to use a punch and tap it out. The shaft is splined on each end. The solution for the future ( cause that return spring will break again) is to use a bolt long enough to pass through before the threads start.
I have an Oregon Clone and it is the same thing. No notches to help guide the ball bearings and to hold the 10 degrees. I would have thought that the Oregon with their much higher cost would have added this small extra enhancement. If one has to rehab a rocked chain and several passes were required this extra feature would be important.
