Watford General Hospital is a 521-bed acute District General Hospital situated on Vicarage Road, Watford, Hertfordshire. Together with Hemel Hempstead Hospital and St Albans City Hospital , it is operated by West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust .
The hospital was established by St Albans Board of Guardians as a workhouse in 1838. [2] It became known as the St Albans Public Assistance Institution in 1930, Osterhills Hospital in 1948 and the St Albans City Hospital in the 1950s. [2] Two wards at the hospital closed in February 2017. [3]
The hospital was commissioned in 2013 by the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, at a cost of £30 million. It was designed by the architects Penoyre & Prasad . [ 1 ] It was officially opened by Alistair Burt , the Minister for Community and Social Care at the time, and Simon Stevens , the Chief Executive of NHS England on 6 November 2015.
