Muckshaw Ponds, in Fredon Township, New Jersey, are home to the Revolutionary War hideout of Lieutenant James Moody.Moody, a local legend, was a Loyalist recruiter who combed the Delaware River corridor and hid in limestone caves near Muckshaw Pond (the caves are on private property) so he could raid local farms.
Fredon Township (/ ˈ f r iː d ən / FREE-dən) is a township in Sussex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey.As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 3,235, [8] a decrease of 202 (−5.9%) from the 2010 census count of 3,437, [16] [17] which in turn reflected an increase of 577 (+20.2%) from the 2,860 counted in the 2000 census.
Created by the colonial courts in Morris County from New Jersey's last unorganized wilderness areas; [23] one of original four precincts ceded to create Sussex County in 1753. [3] From 1754 to 1864 was divided on six occasions to create 9 municipalities (direct and indirect parent of 18 of Sussex County's present-day 24 municipalities). [3]

In the mid-18th century, two descendants of New Amsterdam Dutch families, Johannes Coursen, and his wife, Gertrude Van Tuyle, arrived in the Fredon area. In 1763, Johannes Coursen purchased over 800 acres in the township. A log cabin was most likely the first building on the property. The Coursen mansion was built in 1805.
