Santo Domingo (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈsanto ðoˈmiŋɡo] meaning "Saint Dominic" but verbatim "Holy Sunday"), once known as Santo Domingo de Guzmán, known as Ciudad Trujillo between 1936 and 1961, is the capital and largest city of the Dominican Republic and the largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean by population. After Trujillo's assassination in 1961, the government changed the name of the monument to "Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración" (Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration). It is now dedicated to the heroes of the Dominican Restoration War, [2] fought from 1863 to 1865 against Dominican Loyalist and Spanish forces.
