[5] One-celled organisms called monothalamea have been found in the trench at a record depth of 10.6 km (35,000 ft; 6.6 mi) below the sea surface by researchers from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Ahyi Seamount is an active shallow submarine volcano in the Northern Mariana Islands, in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean. It has erupted 5 times since the year 2000; in 2001, 2014, 2022–23, and twice in 2024. [1] Since 2009, it has been a part of Marianas Trench Marine National Monument of the United States.
