Rita was born and raised in Bluefield, West Virginia, and is the eldest of two sisters. She grew up under modest circumstances. Her father was a coal miner, and her mother was a schoolteacher. When she first arrived in Springfield to take a job as a nurse at Cedars Hospital, Rita began dating Dr. Tim Ryan (Jordan Clarke).
Rita catches the eye of Dr. Ed Bauer and they become close, with Rita helping Ed overcome his alcoholism. Despite pressure from Tim to marry him, Rita has feelings for Ed, despite her past with his nemesis Roger Thorpe. Ed and Rita grow closer when Rita's sister Eve and their mother Viola arrive in Springfield after Viola suffers a stroke.
Upon his arrival in town, widower Henry Chamberlain briefly dated Viola Stapleton, Rita and Eve's mother, who had become tired of the stress Springfield and her daughters brought to her life, and moved back to her hometown of Bluefield, West Virginia, before anything could come of it. Henry would go on to date Bea Reardon.
