Florence is a city in Marion County, Kansas, United States. [ 1 ] As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 394. [ 4 ] The city was named after the daughter of the third Governor of Kansas Samuel J. Crawford. [ 5 ] It is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 50 and U.S. Route 77 highways.

Samuel J. Crawford. Samuel Johnson Crawford (April 10, 1835 – October 21, 1913) was a Union Army officer during the American Civil War, and the third Governor of Kansas (1865–1868). He also served as one of the first members of the Kansas Legislature.
In 1854, the Kansas Territory was organized, then in 1861 Kansas became the 34th U.S. state. In 1867, McPherson County was established within the Kansas Territory, which included the land for modern day Canton. As early as 1875, city leaders of Marion held a meeting to consider a branch railroad from Florence.
