Lady Franklin Bay is in a generally northeast to southwest direction, and as such it spreads inland about 110 km (70 mi) from Hall Basin. Jane, Lady Franklin (née Griffin; 4 December 1791 – 18 July 1875) was a British explorer, seasoned traveler and the second wife of the English explorer Sir John Franklin. [1] During her husband's period as Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen's Land , she became known for her philanthropic work and her travels throughout south-eastern Australia.
Lady Franklin was a 268-ton barque built at Port Arthur, Van Diemen's Land, in 1841, and was named after Jane Franklin, the wife of the governor, Sir John Franklin. The barque was best known for being seized by convicts in a mutiny in 1853. [1] [2] The vessel was used mainly for the conveyance of stores between Tasmania and Norfolk Island.
Lady Franklin became the ship's owner and, it being too late to reach the Bering Straits in time for the following summer, arranged for the vessel to make a brief sortie to the coast of Greenland under Edward Inglefield, RN, with Thomas Abernethy as his ice master, later that year.
