An open studio event is an event in which, for a limited time, artists and makers open their studios to the public. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] It can be thought of as a number of studios that are not normally an open studio , becoming open within a locality and within a time frame defined by the event.

Each artist is granted a free non-living studio space and a stipend. Artists have access to the museum's studios and are expected to work in the studio a minimum of 20 hours per week and participate in open studios and public programs. At the end of the residency, an exhibition of the artists' work is presented in the museum's galleries. [22]
The first-ever OHNY Weekend took place on October 11 and 12, 2003. By the 7th festival in 2009, it had grown to 185,000 visitors to more than 190 sites.
