Africa has 61 international tripoints (the highest number of international tripoints), followed by Asia with 51, Europe with 48, South America with 13, and North America with two. Oceania has no international tripoints by virtue of being almost entirely island countries with no land borders.

Malta and parts of France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain are located on the African continental plate, some considerably closer to the African mainland than the European mainland but, politically, are generally considered to be European by convention. Egypt, although extending into Asia through the Sinai Peninsula, is considered an African state.

A single country may have multiple distinct land borders with the same neighbour (e.g., due to enclaves, exclaves, or disconnected regions). Distinct Land Neighbours: Refers to the number of unique countries a nation borders via land.
