Alton was originally settled in the 1816 by Martin Middaugh Jr, a United Empire Loyalist who received a 200 acre land grant from the Crown, likely for military service. In the ensuing years a hamlet emerged thanks to a prosperous milling operation on Shaw Creek a tributary of the Credit River.
The maps are named for Charles E. Goad who first produced such things for Fire Insurance companies. [1] [2] Charles Goad was a Civil Engineer who practised in Toronto, London, Ontario, and elsewhere. His major business was the creation of detailed street maps for the inner areas of industrial cities, often as a client of insurance companies.
The Aztec Hotel is a historical landmark building in Monrovia, in the San Gabriel Valley, California. The hotel is an example of Mayan Revival architecture still in existence. It was designed by architect Robert Stacy-Judd, and built on U.S. Route 66 in 1925-26. [2] The hotel opened to the public in September 1925, and contained over 40 rooms. [3]

Living Coasts opened to the public on 14 July 2003, [7] built on the site of the former Torquay Marine Spa. As of 2011 was being visited by over 100,000 visitors a year. [ 8 ] It officially closed in June 2020, following significant loss of income caused by the COVID-19 pandemic crisis.

Industries were primarily agricultural, with grist, flour, woollen and lumber mills located along the Mount Albert Creek. The first known store was built in 1850 to supply dry goods to the villagers and surrounding farmers. The main north-south road in the village, Centre Street, was built along the path of an Algonquin Indian trail.
