Midwest USA. Posted December 16, 2023. Well, after a year of searching, I finally found my first trilobite! They are relatively rare in my area (KC), so I’m pretty ecstatic. Decided to take this prep nice and slow, here’s the bug how I found it: Rock is thankfully not really sticky, was able to spend 40 min on this yesterday:
One of the classic Cambrian trilobite fossil sites in the western U.S. is located at this beautiful outcrop in a 60 foot thick formation over 550 million years old. Trilobites were small marine crustaceans that resembled modern day horseshoe crabs.
This is another devonian trilobite from Morocco: Coltraneia oufatenensis (Morzadec, 2001), member of the order Phacopida from the upper Emsian of Jbel Oufaten. Specimen with characteristic eyes full of eye facets, tricky to set free of matrix (left some inbetween lenses and few other spots untill a possibility to sandblast presents).

The rarest and hardest to find trilobites are in Permian aged rock. This includes in northern Arizona the Kaibab and the Fort Apache Limestones. Sometimes not much contrast between the matrix and the fossil makes it more difficult. If there is a bit of separation the matrix will become loose at the last micrometres, if not, it results in damage or sandblasting, which will also damage the lenses, because calcite in lenses is softer as the rest of the skin. 2.

Because although I haven't written anything up since October, I've actually been on more fossil hunting trips in the last few months than in the entirety of last year. This is mostly the result of finally getting a car again back in August after spending the back half of 2021 and almost all of 2022 without one.
