Question: I have a Vermont Castings Winter Warm Large fireplace insert. It was installed by professionals 2 years ago. The unit works well, but I have a problem. The surround does not block the entire opening of the existing fireplace. I have approximately 3 inches of space at both sides...

1,601. Adams County, PA. Dec 1, 2009. #3. I don't have your stove, but in the Jotul Oslo the insulation blanket is MORE important than the baffle plate it sits on. In fact, the plate really only serves the purpose of protecting the insulation blanket and giving it a surface to lay on.
2) Insert resides in steel firebox. No insulation between firebox and exterior walls; nor around flue above. 3) $1000. Blown-in dense-pack fiberglass. 4) $3000. Exterior wood-siding removed. Frame-in ceiling deck above fireplace with metal fire-stop. Insulate that deck. Insulate and sheet all walls around fireplace.
The attached pics show (1) a fireplace that use to burn wood now converted with a fireplace insert that uses natural gas. The remaining pics show what that same fireplace looks like in the crawl space. In particular, they had stuffed pink fiberglass into areas around the chimney.
