Tūheitia, the Māori King and leader of the Kīngitanga, died on 30 August 2024 at the age of 69. The King had been recovering in hospital from an unsuccessful cardiac surgery. [1] His death came less than two weeks after hosting his eighteenth koroneihana, the annual celebration of his coronation.
The election of the eighth Māori monarch took place from 3 to 5 September 2024, following the death of King Tūheitia. The Tekau-mā-rua (Tūheitia's privy council) convened a meeting of tribal leaders from throughout New Zealand to chose his successor by consensus. They chose Ngā Wai Hono i te Pō, Tūheitia's youngest child and only daughter.

Māhanga was the son of Tūheitia, a famous warrior, based at Papa-o-rotu in Waikāretu, who was said to have never been attacked at home and was the author of the proverbial saying, "come to me, to the Papa-o-rotu, to the unstirred current, to the pillow that falls not, and the undisturbed sleep. Although I am small, I have teeth."
Tūheitia's death also represented the growing distance between the Crown and Māori, and the national hui in January had raised his national significance further. Overall, this was a huge national event of global significance that made the news around the world.
The Maori king Tūheitia Paki was a namesake of the ancestor Tūheitia. Māhanga is a key ancestor of Waikato, as all the Waikato iwi trace their descent from him. Ngāti Māhanga however, is a particular reference to the descendants of his sons: Kiekieraunui, Tupanamaiwaho, Tonganui, Ruateatea and Atutahi. [ 3 ]
