The Atlas Mountains are a mountain range in the Maghreb in North Africa. It separates the Sahara Desert from the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean ; the name "Atlantic" is derived from the mountain range, which stretches around 2,500 km (1,600 mi) through Morocco , Algeria and Tunisia .

The High Atlas, also called the Grand Atlas, is a mountain range in central Morocco, North Africa, the highest part of the Atlas Mountains. The High Atlas rises in the west at the Atlantic Ocean and stretches in an eastern direction to the Moroccan- Algerian border.
There are 14 mountains over 8,000 metres (26,247 ft), which are often referred to as the Eight-thousanders. (Some people have claimed there are six more 8,000m peaks in Nepal, making for a total of 20. [1]) All are in the two highest mountain ranges in the world, the Himalayas and the Karakoram.
