The county has an area of 1,813 square miles (4,700 km 2), of which 1,775 square miles (4,600 km 2) is land and 38 square miles (98 km 2) (2.1%) is water. [7] Marshall is one of 17 Minnesota savanna region counties where savanna soils predominate.
It was overlaid with area code 924 in 2024. It is the first area code overlay complex in Minnesota. The region was directly bordered by 612 (to the north) until that area code was divided in the 1990s. The western half of 507 bordered area code 320 starting in 1996, and then later came to border also area code 651 (1998) and area code 952 (2000).
