[1] Some of the earliest cello sonatas were composed in the 18th century by Francesco Geminiani and Antonio Vivaldi, and since then other famous cello sonatas have grown to those by Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Sergei Rachmaninoff among others.

The Piano Quartet No. 1 in G minor, Op. 25, was composed by Johannes Brahms between 1856 and 1861. It was premiered in 1861 in Hamburg , with Clara Schumann at the piano. It was also played in Vienna on 16 November 1862, with Brahms himself at the piano supported by members of the Hellmesberger Quartet . [ 1 ]
The sonata is structured in three movements: Allegro maestoso ma appassionato; Adagio con gran affetto – Più mosso assai; Finale / Allegro (un poco scherzando) The sonata shares characteristics with the works in the genre by Johannes Brahms, in harmony, rhythm, figuration, a rich piano part and passionate cello lines. The first movement is in conventional sonata form with a repeated exposition. The opening of the first theme resembles the opening of Beethoven's "Hammerklavier" Sonata. [1] [2] The second movement is a theme and variations inspired by the song Verstohlen geht der Mond auf. Brahms was to rewrite it for female chorus in 1859 (WoO 38/20).
Brahms began the work in the summer of 1868 at Wilhelmshaven, but it was not completed until May 1871. [1] The delay was primarily due to Brahms's hesitation over how the piece should end. Hesitant to make a decision, he began work on the Alto Rhapsody , Op. 53, which was completed in 1869 and first performed in 1870.
