The valleculae can collect saliva to prevent initiation of the swallowing reflex. The vallecula is an important reference landmark used during intubation of the trachea. The procedure requires the blade-tip of a Macintosh-style laryngoscope to be placed as far as possible into the vallecula in order to facilitate directly visualizing the glottis .
The petrochemical industry has been trying to save itself by attempting to rapidly expand demand for plastic products worldwide (i.e. through pushbacks on plastic bans and by increasing the number of products wrapped in plastic in countries where plastic use is not already as widespread (i.e. developing nations)). [5]
Medical plastics include a wide range of products from bags to pharmaceutical containers that leach and expose patients and healthcare workers to MNPs. [73] Further research is needed to assess toxicology and medical significance of MNPs from medical plastics. Microplastics per square meter in the EU sewage sludge (2015–2019) [74]
Oxo-degradation refers to the breakdown mechanism caused by heat, light or oxygen on plastics that contain additives that accelerate the process of breaking them into smaller fragments called microplastics. [1] These plastics contrast biodegradable or compostable plastics, which decompose at the molecular or polymer level. [2]
Microcellular plastics, otherwise known as microcellular foam, is a form of manufactured plastic fabricated to contain billions of tiny bubbles less than 50 microns wide (typically 0.1–100 micrometers).
HDPE is known for its high strength-to-density ratio. [4] The density of HDPE ranges from 930 to 970 kg/m 3. [5] Although the density of HDPE is only marginally higher than that of low-density polyethylene, HDPE has little branching, giving it stronger intermolecular forces and tensile strength (38 MPa versus 21 MPa) than LDPE. [6]
The material of construction of multilayered packaging ranges from paper to plastics to metals. Most multilayered packages are not readily recyclable. [2] Basf company and Uflex recently developed multilayered food packaging from 100% recyclable materials. [3] [4]
Figure 1. Bingham Plastic flow as described by Bingham. Figure 1 shows a graph of the behaviour of an ordinary viscous (or Newtonian) fluid in red, for example in a pipe. If the pressure at one end of a pipe is increased this produces a stress on the fluid tending to make it move (called the shear stress) and the volumetric flow rate increases proportionally.
