Asbury First United Methodist Church is located on East Avenue in Rochester, New York, United States. It traces its heritage to several Rochester congregations dating back to the 1820s. [ 1 ] In its current form, it is the result of a 1934 merger of First Church and Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church.
Today the church and its chapels occupy a full block on Hennepin. The church was organized as Hennepin Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in 1875 by about ninety members of Centenary church, which at the time was the only Methodist church in the city. [1] The Quaker church organized the Sunday school. [1]
The church was renamed Wesley United Methodist Church when the Methodist Episcopal Church and Evangelical United Brethren Church merged in 1968. [5] The Preservation Alliance of Minnesota listed it on its 2010 10 Most Endangered Historic Places list. [6] The church is currently occupied by Substance Church.
