You're not wrong in that point that it can take multiple steps to see the hint to make sense. However that is the nature of some sudoku puzzles the hints aren't going to resolve in just one step. I recall Cracking the Cryptic having a Star Wars themed puzzle that took 6 swordfish and an X-wing to get the first non-preset digit in the puzzle placed.

Got really into the NYT sudoku the last 3 months and have also noticed this. If I’m working through puzzles I do my best not to close out of the app because it won’t refresh unless you close it.
