Beginning with the class of 2004, students in the ninth grade in the Rush-Henrietta district began attending the Ninth Grade Academy (the Carlton Webster building). This move was made in response to an overcrowding of students at the Senior High building. The building is a short distance (0.5 miles [0.80 km]) from the high school.
In 2004, Sumter County High School and Americus High School merged, becoming Americus-Sumter County High School. At this time, the South Campus housed grades 10-12 while the North Campus (formerly Sumter County High School) served as the 9th Grade Academy, the Performance Learning Center, and the alternative school.

The school was built in 1970. Originally housing 7th, 8th and 9th grades as Tift County Junior High School, the initial enrollment was 1350 compared to approximately 600 today. Tift County High School, Northeast Campus is now a 9th grade school.
