This is a list of Iowa county courthouses. Each county in Iowa has a city that is the county seat where the county government resides, including a county courthouse, except for Lee County , which has two county seats and two county courthouses.
After the county seat was moved to Iowa City a 56-by-28-foot (17.1 by 8.5 m), two-story brick courthouse, was completed in 1842. [2] A jail was built at the same time. The first courthouse built on the present courthouse square was built about 1856, but the records are unclear as to its specifications. [3]
[2] [3] The original courthouse was a log structure on the Big Sioux River in the hamlet of Calliope, Iowa (now part of Hawarden). That building was part office, part residence, and part fort, but in 1869–1870 the White residents of Calliope fled to Sioux City, Iowa , 40 miles to the south, temporarily abandoning the log courthouse during ...
Phase one construction, the western half of the building, was completed in March 2006 and the county jail, communications center and sheriff's department, assessor, recorder, treasurer, veterans affairs, clerk of courts, and community services moved into the new facility during an 8-inch (20 cm) snowstorm. [5]
Court related offices were moved into newly renovated areas during the project. In 2004 a bond referendum was passed by county voters to expand the size of the jail. The $29.7 million expansion was opened in 2007 [14] and expanded the courthouse and jail complex with a 75,000-square-foot (7,000 m 2) addition. [15]
This was a typical practice of most counties in Iowa. [2] Plans for the first courthouse were accepted in June 1837, but construction of the 30-by-18-foot (9.1 by 5.5 m) structure was delayed and the building was not completed until 1839.
Dissatisfaction in the western part of the county led the Iowa General Assembly to appoint three new commissioners who would move the county seat to a site they called Livonia, which was near Clear Lake. A courthouse was built there, and some of the county records were moved in the winter of 1857. County officials reluctantly followed.
The Lyon County Courthouse is located in Rock Rapids, Iowa, United States. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The courthouse is the second building the county has used for court functions and county administration.
