Completed in February 1942 the new airport was called New Merced Municipal Airport and served as an Airport Auxiliary Field. After the war, on 6 December 1948, the airport was returned to the City of Merced. Parts of the airport were used later by US Army helicopters, US Air Force and Navy aircraft to refuel aircraft in the years following.
