The 6R 80 features "Filled for Life" low viscosity synthetic transmission fluid (MERCON LV), though a fluid flush is recommended at 150,000 mi (241,000 km) if your truck falls under the classification of "Severe Duty" operation. The transmission, as used in the Ford F-150, has a fluid capacity of 13.1 US qt (12.4 L) and weighs 215 lb (98 kg).
In 1959, Ford released their own Type-A automatic transmission fluid specification (M2C33-A) and stopped using GM fluid specifications for their in-house transmissions. The Ford M2C33-A fluid had GM Type "A" Suffix "A" characteristics. Transmission fluid service life was fairly short, and frequent transmission oil changes were required.
General Motors uses Texaco ATF Type III 1863 fluid and is certified "fill-for-life," requiring no fluid changes. [2] Ford US lists a fill specification of 3.65 quarts of Mercon-V automatic transmission fluid. FCA Applications use Mopar ATF +4 Automatic Transmission Fluid.
A four-speed manual transmission was standard on all engines for 1983 and 1984, with a five-speed manual as an option; a three-speed automatic was offered on 2.3L and 2.8L engines. For 1985, the five-speed manual became the standard transmission, with a four-speed automatic offered on non-diesel Rangers.
The design of these transmissions required a new fluid. In 2005, Ford released the Mercon Low Viscosity (LV) fluid and GM released the DEXRON-VI specification. [19] The fluid specification for DEXRON-VI (J) was first used as the GM factory-fill automatic transmission fluid for the model year 2006.
