The Beeching cuts were a reduction in the size of the British railway network, along with a restructuring of British Rail, in the 1960s. Since the mid-1990s there has been significant growth in passenger numbers on the railways and renewed government interest in the role of rail in UK transport.
In particular, the railway system must be modelled to meet current needs, and the modernisation plan must be adapted to this new shape" [20] and with the premise that the railways should be run as a profitable business. [21] Beeching first studied traffic flows on all lines to identify "the good, the bad, and the indifferent". [22]
However, many railway historians including Christian Wolmar, [9] Henshaw and others now regard it as a costly failure and a missed opportunity. [10] An attempt was made to simply update the railways as they already stood rather than reacting to changes in the way goods and people were travelling in the post-war years. [11]

This list is for railway lines across Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which are now abandoned, closed, dismantled or disused. Within the United Kingdom, examples exist of opened railways which formerly constituted cross-country main trunk lines as well as many more which served more local, or exclusively industrial, needs.
It is worth noting that the size, shape and level of service of the railway network in Great Britain was the subject of debate for many decades before the appointment of Beeching. The Salter Report of 1933 attempted to address the issue of growing abstraction of rail traffic by road and the low level of road pricing.
