The brahmavihārā (sublime attitudes, lit. "abodes of Brahma") is a series of four Buddhist virtues and the meditation practices made to cultivate them. Mettā is a Pali word, from maitrī which was itself derived from mitra which, states Monier-Williams, means "friend". [12] The term is found in this sense in the Vedic literature, [13] such as the Shatapatha Brahmana and various early Upanishads, and Vedanga literature such as Pāṇini's Aṣṭādhyāyī 5.4.36. [12]
