"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" is a Christian hymn by Charles Wesley, first published in 1747. It was initially published as part of his Hymns for Those that Seek and Find and quickly became a central hymn in both Methodist and wider Christian worship .
Probably his best-known composition is the hymn-tune "Blaenwern", composed in 1905 and often used as the setting for Love Divine, All Loves Excelling. As well as being a church musician, Rowlands taught in several schools and was conductor of the Morriston United Choral Society. [3]
Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, set to Blaenwern, was sung at the wedding blessing of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles and it was also selected as one of three hymns sung at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, [3] the others being Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer, set to Cwm Rhondda, and Jerusalem.
Charles Wesley was the eighteenth child of Susanna Wesley and Samuel Wesley.He was born in Epworth, Lincolnshire, England, where his father was rector. [3] In 1716, at the age of 8, he entered Westminster School, where his brother Samuel was usher.
Charles Wesley's hymn "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling" was first sung to Purcell's music for "Fairest Isle", and in places echoes its lyrics. [8] In 1770, when David Garrick staged a version of King Arthur deprived of many of Purcell's songs, particularly those in the act 5 masques, "Fairest Isle" survived the cuts. [9]

In Queen Elizabeth's Birthday Honours bestowed in 2021, he received a British Empire Medal for life-long services to Church Music and Music Education.
