Khalid Ben-Hassin Doctor Fate was Kent Nelson, who was orphaned as a child after his archaeologist father was killed for opening the tomb of the wizard Nabu. The wizard raised Nelson and taught him the ways of magic, eventually giving him a mystical amulet and the Helmet of Fate, which contained Nabu's essence.
