Orthopristis chrysoptera, the pigfish, hogfish, piggy perch, redmouth grunt or sailor's choice, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a grunt belonging to the family Haemulidae. It is found in the western Atlantic Ocean. This name derives from the grunting or chattering noise these fish make by rubbing their pharyngeal teeth together.
Congiopodidae was first formally recognised as a family by the American biologist Theodore Gill in 1889. [1] The 5th edition of Fishes of the World classifies the family within the suborder Scorpaenoidei which in turn is classified within the order Scorpaeniformes. [2]

The southern pigfish has smooth skin and no spines in the anal fin.The profile of the head is nearly vertical between the eye and the origin of the dorsal fin.The overall colour of the body is brownish above and cream below marked with a row of pale and dark blotches along the flanks while the remainder of the body is blotched. The lyretail hogfish (Bodianus anthioides), also known as the lyretail pigfish, [3] is a species of wrasse from the genus Bodianus. The fish can be found in the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea to Tuamotu. [4] The adults occur along the seaward edges of reefs and in Micronesia are commonest below 25 metres (82 ft) in depth.
The whitenose pigfish is endemic to southern and western Australia where there have been scattered records from the central coast of South Australia and off the southern and western coasts of Western Australia as far north as Port Denison. [10] It is a reef associated, benthic species found on the continental shelf. [1]
