Born and raised in Yuba City, California, Petersen played safety and quarterback for the Honkers at Yuba City High School under the guidance of coach George Calkins. After graduation in 1983, he played quarterback for the Sacramento City College Panthers for two seasons, then transferred to non-scholarship UC Davis, [1] then in Division II.
