Stanton is a city in Stanton County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 1,577 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Stanton County. [4] Stanton was platted in 1870. [5] Both the city and county are named after Edwin Stanton, secretary of war for president Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. [6]

Stanton was originally called Belleview, and under the latter name was laid out in 1844. [2] Stanton was the name of the post office at Belleview. [2] A post office was established under the name Stanton in 1862, and remained in operation until 1911.
