They are located east of Lake Skinner reservoir, southwest of Hemet, northeast of Temecula. Diamond Valley reservoir fills a basin in their northwestern area. The San Jacinto Mountains are to the northeast, and Santa Ana Mountains to the west.
The Second Aqueduct is 94 mi (151 km) long, beginning at the Colorado River Aqueduct, flowing into Lake Skinner and then into Lower Otay Reservoir near San Diego. In the first 16 mi (26 km) from the Colorado River Aqueduct to Lake Skinner, Pipeline 3 consists of an open canal handling approximately 500 cu ft/s (14 m 3 /s).
