Aluminium alloys are often used due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, low cost, high thermal and electrical conductivity.There are a variety of techniques to join aluminium including mechanical fasteners, welding, adhesive bonding, brazing, soldering and friction stir welding (FSW), etc. Various techniques are used based on the cost and strength required for the joint.
Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process that uses a non-consumable tool to join two facing workpieces without melting the workpiece material. [1] [2] Heat is generated by friction between the rotating tool and the workpiece material, which leads to a softened region near the FSW tool.
The benefit of welding as a joining process for steel is that it creates a bond that is almost always stronger than the components it is joining. This is why welding can be used to join the seams of pressure vessels and used to perform complete joint penetration welds on structural components that require high tensile strengths.
An example is diffusion of aluminum from aluminum bronze to a ferrous alloy when joining these. A diffusion barrier, e.g. a copper layer (e.g. in a trimet strip), can be used. A sacrificial layer of a noble metal can be used on the base metal as an oxygen barrier, preventing formation of oxides and facilitating fluxless brazing.
