Newport is a city in and the county seat of Jackson County, Arkansas, United States located on the White River, 84 miles (135 km) northeast of Little Rock. The population was 7,879 at the 2010 census .
The Jackson County Courthouse is located along Main Street (Arkansas Highway 367) in the center of Newport, Arkansas, the county seat of Jackson County. It is a Late Victorian brick building, with a protruding three-story square tower. It was built in 1892, and is one of the state's oldest courthouses.
The Grimes Unit and the McPherson Unit, prisons of the Arkansas Department of Correction, are located in Newport, off of Arkansas Highway 384, 4 miles (6.4 km) east of central Newport. Auvergne is a community in Jackson County, Arkansas, United States. The unincorporated town is located a couple miles southeast of Newport, Arkansas , on Arkansas Highway 17 . [ 1 ] The area is sparsely populated with a few houses on the main stretch of the highway surrounded by large swathes of farmland.
The Newport American Legion Community Hut is a historic log meeting hall in Remmel Park, north of Remmel Avenue, in Newport, Arkansas. It is a single-story structure, with a gable roof, and a front porch with a shed roof supported by log columns. The interior has retained all of its exposed log framing.
It was among the city's first retail stores. Today, it is the oldest wood-frame structure that still exists in downtown Bend. [1] [2] Because of its importance to Bend history, the N. P. Smith Pioneer Hardware Store was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 5 April 1984. [6] [7]
